The ROSPA (Royal Society for the prevention of accidents) recommend that tyres are changed at 3mm to minimise the risk of accidents and maintain optimum vehicle performance. There's financial costs to not maintaining safe tyres with fuel economy can be reduced 5% due to underinflated tyres, giving you less miles per gallon and your insurance could be invalidated if you were found to be driving an illegal tyre.
